Cala Sant Francesc serves as the launch point for one of the Costa Brava's most accessible sea-kayaking routes, operating from a narrow crescent of beach where the crystalline Mediterranean meets Blanes' southern cliffs. The stretch between Blanes and Lloret de Mar conceals more than forty marine caves, carved over millennia by wave action against the region's sedimentary rock, and most remain unreachable except by paddle. While Barcelona lies just sixty kilometres south, the Costa Brava's jagged coastline here retains the ecological character that earned the Catalan shore its name—the Wild Coast—when the term was coined in 1908 by journalist Ferran Agulló. The Blanes kayak tour network has operated from Cala Sant Francesc since the early 2000s, when the town's fishing heritage began transitioning toward adventure tourism. Crystal Kayaks Blanes maintains the longest-running outfitter presence at the cove, offering both guided excursions and independent rentals between April and October. The site's appeal lies in its immediate access to sheltered waters: the cala's natural breakwater keeps morning conditions calm enough for first-time paddlers, while the cliffs flanking the beach rise directly into the protected marine reserve that extends along the coast. Posidonia seagrass meadows carpet the shallows here, supporting populations of octopus, sea bream, and the occasional loggerhead turtle tracked by the Centre de Recuperació d'Animals Marins in nearby Premià de Mar. Guided routes typically follow the coastline northeast toward Sa Palomera, the volcanic outcrop that divides Blanes' two main beaches, then continue into the cave systems that riddle the cliffs beyond. The largest accessible chamber, known locally as Cova de les Orenetes, reaches fifteen metres in depth and hosts roosting swallows during spring migration. Sunrise departures—scheduled between 6:00 and 7:30 depending on season—coincide with the lowest boat traffic and offer the clearest underwater visibility for snorkelling stops. Water temperature here ranges from 14°C in March to 26°C in August, cold enough in shoulder months to justify the neoprene wetsuits included in most tour packages. The reserve prohibits motorised vessels within two hundred metres of shore, leaving the paddle tours as the primary human presence in the marine zone during morning hours.
